Music. The Wings of Man's Soul

~ January 19, 2007 at 4:12 (Views: 92)

I have long stated this. I have always been into music. Ever since I was young, I can remember hearing Marilyn Manson's records from a friend @ McCallie down in Chattanooga, Tennessee and I remember thinking to myself, this is so awesome.

Little did I know, Manson was far from anything amazing. I was astonished at the shock-rock factor, I believe. However, the more I grew up, the more I started listening to pop rock and alternative music. I found a niche in this vein of music. It has everything that I love in it. Soaring vocals, crunching guitars, storming bass lines, and thundering drums. But thats not what makes music life to me. The emotion in the vocals and the lyrics of alternative rock music just send my soul flying through a sonic trip through my past. I can hear a song and sooner or later, I will look back on that time and attach that memory to the song, often times, years later.

For instance, Armor For Sleep. Far from a favorite but a great emo band I enjoy. They have a record called "Dream To Make Believe," that I was very into years back. When Cara and I had our first dip in the road with the parentals, I remember driving home with snow flurrying in the cold winter's air and listening to Armor For Sleep and just feeling like I was in that song... Its odd, but music can do this to me. So naturally, everytime I hear AFS, I think of Cara in a sad way. Other noteworthy nostalgic memories that I can attach to music are:

-Champagne by July For Kings: Mine and Cara's song.
-Slide by the Goo Goo Dolls: this song will always hold dear to my heart because I was playing this song when Cara knew she loved me. I cherish this song for that, if nothing else.
-Here Without You by 3 Doors Down: First, this song made me think of Katie, my long time X, because I had it when it first came out. She and I were on the rocks and ended up ending because she was a selfish bitch that decided she liked thugs from the Planet more than a guy with a future. I am thankful she is gone though because God brought a much better girl into my life, Cara. Ironically enough, I ended up meeting Cara at a 3 Doors Down concert and this song has since become very dear to she and I both.
-Paperthin Hymn by Anberlin: Moody and my favorite song. Reminds me or he and I living together at Buc Ridge, drinking beer, and having each other as comrades in the "War of Women" that we were both locked in at the time.
-New Black Car by July For Kings: one of my all time favorite songs. Reminds me of driving alone with nowhere to go, singing and thinking about nothing at all but Joe singing. This is the only song that can make me think of nothing but mesmerize me everytime.
-How Long by Hinder: reminds me of the first time I bought a Glock 9mm and the first time I wrecked my Civic.
-Drown by Magna-Fi: sheer joy and astonishment at being in love.
-Time Ago by Black Lab: the song I could sing to Cara 10 years from now if we aren't together. I love this song so much. ONe of the best of all time.
-Circus Lights by Black Lab: this song is one of my all time favorites. It reminds me of just unrequited love. It also reminds me of when I met my friend Elin, because it was the song I was obsessed with at the time. It is one of the best songs ever, like "Time Ago."
-Broken Hearted by Eighteen Visions: best song of 2006. Period. Hands down. Unbelievable song. Reminds me of when Cara and I broke up.
-Gone by Northmont: reminds me of when me, Moody, and Jess would drive to Asheville, NC to see them play live and Moody would be drunk before we got in the car to go down there and puking the entire way back up I-26 with Jess in the back, talking to me about Cara and my love life.
-Mixtape by Butch Walker: one of my all time faves. Reminds me of Cara in the purest sense because in the 3 years we were together, she gave me one mixtape and I love it and have it stored away to this day safe, and sound.

There are thousands of others and this list could go on forever and ever. Look for more updates from me shortly.
