Is MusicStrands importing data from other playlist systems?

~ January 19, 2006 at 2:19 (Views: 70)

I started creating a Neil Young-related playlist on MusicStrands. This is a playlist I've seeded in a few other places such as Upto11.net.

When I was half way through creating my playlist on MusicStrands, I noticed that the recommendations MusicStrands was making were exactly the tracks that made up the other half of my playlist.

How could MusicStrands know this, since these tracks are not at all predictable from the first half of the playlist - at least not with 100% accuracy? I assume MusicStrands is not literally reading my mind, so is it importing playlists like the Upto11 version of my Neil Young playlist to help it make recommendations?

I'd be interested to know - thanks.

What if other people were creating playlists of Neil Young, and they had similar songs on them? From my understanding the recommendation software that MyStrands.com uses is very advanced and it pulls together gobs of information from many sources to make recommendations (not only play history) - but also other users and possibly other websites.

Something cool I came across on MyStrands.com... I don't know if it relates to what we're talking about, but here is the link: http://labs.mystrands.com/artistnet/index.html

Also check out labs.mystrands.com ... There are some cool things to look at there.

Cheers!

Statistically the chances of other people's Neil Young-related playlists being aggregated to produce exactly the same tracks as mine are about 1 in 100 billion.

I spoke to someone at MyStrands, who confirmed that they do 'scrape' some data from other playlist sharing sites - so they had picked up my own playlist that way.
