I was born in Mexico. Yeah, that's the place where white people go to get drunk and never remember whether they actually did or not. I didn't move to the United States until I was six years old. It was right after I graduated kindergarden. I started first grade in Los Angeles. I didn't like it...especially after one of my classmates, a black kid, actually stole my shoes and I was forced to walk home without them. It wasn't that I liked the shoes, I actually hated them. The problem was that my mother knew that I wasn't fond of the shoes and she thought I threw them away so that I could get some new ones. She beat my ass.
Anyways...back to my story...
I've liked every type of music ever made in my life. I'll explain....
The reason that I started this story when I came into the US is because I don't remember being into any type of music before that. The first real taste that I got was from my uncle. He had lived in Los Angeles for most of his life and was really into the popular music at the time. It was 1991 and UB40's Red Red Wine was always playing on his stereo. I had no idea what the guy was saying, but the song was catchy so it caught my attention. My aunt was really into Madonna. They were the coolest people I had ever met, my uncle and my aunt. I Loved their music even though I hadn't the slightest idea what any of it was saying, plus, they took my sisters and me to the zoo, Universal Studios, and Six Flags all the time. A couple years later my mother decided to move to Bakersfield and take us with her.
For the first few years that I lived in Bakersfield I got into the whole Mexican acordion music. The stuff that kinda sounded like polka. Yeah, I remember the names of the artists and the songs that I liked, but I refuse to disclose that information....
Well, that didn't actually last long because then that movie Dangerous Minds came out and I heard Rap in the form of Coolio. As retarded as I think that song is now, I thought it was the most awesome sound I had ever heard then. I began to listen to the local Rap stations and was really thinking about busting a cap when something else caught my attention....Shakira, Mana, and Jaguares. Yes back to Mexican music...but this time it was rock. Contrary to popular belief, Shakira was famous for over half a decade before she started to sing in English (gasp!!!).
That was my first taste of Rock music. Little did I know then that the beautiful melodic waves that the guitar sent out into space would actually become a huge part of my life.
