The Makaha Sons...of Ni'ihau?

~ February 20, 2007 at 8:53 (Views: 91 )

It's a small thing, but when Israel Kamakawiwo'ole left the group, he was the last "son of Ni'ihau." So, the difference between "The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau" and "The Makaha Sons" is the absence/presence of the Kamakawiwo'ole twins. (Skippy Kamakawiwo'ole died as the group was becoming established in the Hawaiian music scene.) The generic "Makaha Sons" for early and late recordings by this group is a tad incorrect, but that's how things are interpreted from a distance.

Hello from "Washington, USA"?

~ February 18, 2007 at 2:52 (Views: 75 )

I noticed that "Wahi'awa, HI" looked odd on the world map, so I went to change my location. "USA" for Country was OK, as was "Hawaii" for State/Province. When I clicked on the world map, I found that I'd been moved to Washington D.C.! I changed the Zip code digits to the original five digit version, but I'm still popping up on the East coast U.S., which is verrry interesting. I wonder if I'll have to reregister to correct this 3,000-plus-mile move?

"Pali Presents a Tribute" (2006)

~ January 25, 2007 at 10:40 (Views: 109 )

A holiday offering, perfect for fans of "Summer," "Country Comfort," "Kalapana," "Cecilio & Kapono," "The Peter Moon Band," and "Keola & Kapono Beamer." Pali Ka'aihue's band, "Pali," recreated the feel of the originals with the help of group members who were there the first time around.

1) Love Will Forget (from "Summer in Malibu")
2) Dorothy Louise (from "Kalapana")
3) Railway Stations (from "We Are The Children"; "Cecilio & Kapono")
4) Only Good Times (from "Honolulu City Lights")
5) Island Love (from "Tropical Storm")
6) Sun Lite, Moon Lite (from "We Are The Children")
7) Way That I Want It To Be (from "Kalapana")
8) Ballad of Keawaiki (from "Tropical Storm")
9) Forest (from "Summer in Malibu")
10) Mama (from "Country Comfort")
11) You & Me (from "Cecilio & Kapono")

The 1970's in Hawaii had groups and venues everywhere, featuring the above mentioned groups, contributing to the Hawaiian Music Renaissance begun at the University of Hawaii's Andrews Ampihtheater in Kanikapila (let's play music!) sessions. "The Sunday Manoa" of this period became "The Brothers Cazimero" and "The Peter Moon Band," blending the traditonal with the new.

The children's choir sings: "Love tastes like Strawberries..."

"Gold" Lionel Richie/Commodores (2006)

~ January 18, 2007 at 6:27 (Views: 124 )

Cruising around Sam's Club yesterday (hoping The Significant Other won't buy everything in sight!), I decided that it was time to add to the 1980's R&B collection. (Plus "The Essential Bob Dylan," but that's another tale)

Disc One
1) All Night Long (All Night)
2) Penny Lover
3) Say You, Say Me
4) My Destiny
5) Running With The Night
6) Dancing On The Ceiling
7) Love Oh Love
8) Ballerina Girl
9) My Love
10) Love Will Conquer All
11) Do It To Me
12) Cinderella
13) Angel
14) Don't Wanna Lose You
15) Sweet Love (Commodores)
16) Oh No (Commodores)

Disc Two
1) Hello
2) Endless Love (Duet with Diana Ross)
3) Three Times A Lady (Commodores)
4) Sail On (Commodores)
5) Stuck On You
6) You Are
7) Truly
8) Easy (Commodores)
9) Still (Commodores)
10) Just To Be Close To You (Commodores)
11) Lady (You Bring Me Up) (Commodores)
12) Machine Gun (Commodores)
13) Brick House (Commodores)
14) Too Hot Ta Trot (Commodores)
15) Zoom (Commodores)
16) Jesus Is Love (Commodores)

At the time these were getting a lot of radio airplay, I was in my "DMP Jazz period," along with the "Hawaiian Music Renaissance" artists like The Brothers Cazimero, The Peter Moon Band, Keola & Kapono Beamer, Gabby Pahinui, etc.

"The Essential Elvis Presley" (2007)

~ January 6, 2007 at 6:59 (Views: 106 )

I'm not much of an Elvis Presley fan (That would be my older sister.), but after listening to "Elvis Christmas" (2006), I changed my mind about the King from Tupelo. After I read in a local newspaper that there was a new Elvis collection out, I started to look for it at Borders. I'm playing it now, which is a mistake; Last.fm us logging it just fine, but here I'm drawing a blank (as usual). So what's in this Sony/BMG 2 CD set? Recordings from 1955 to 1976 like these:

Disc One
1) That's All Right
2) Baby, Let's Play House
3) Mystery Train
4) Heartbreak Hotel
5) I Was The One
6) Blue Suede Shoes
7) Hound Dog
8) Don't Be Cruel
9) Love Me Tender
10) All Shook Up
11) (There'll Be) Peace in the Valley (For Me)
12) Jailhouse Rock
13) Trouble
14) Fever
15) It's Now Or Never
16) Reconsider Baby
17) Are You Lonesome Tonight?
18) Little Sister
19) Follow That Dream
20) Can't Help Falling In Love

Disc Two
1) Return To Sender
2) (You're The) Devil In Disguise
3) Bossa Nova Baby
4) Viva Las Vegas
5) Big Boss Man
6) A Little Less Conversation
7) If I Can Dream
8) Memories
9) In The Ghetto
10) Suspicious Minds
11) Don't Cry Daddy
12) Kentucky Rain
13) Polk Salad Annie
14) The Wonder of You
15) I Just Can't Help Believing
16) Burning Love
17) Always On My Mind
18) Steamroller Blues
19) Hurt
20) Moody Blue

And now to reconsider Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and "the old Folkies" of yore.

"Christmas Is Love"

~ December 15, 2006 at 10:09 (Views: 49 )

I found this Joan Osborne 2005 music CD release at Barnes & Noble while trying to decide whether to revisit the musical past. The database's track listing is just a TAD wrong:

1)Christmas Means Love
2)Santa Claus Baby
3)Away In A Manger
4)Christmas Must Be Tonight
5)Cherry Tree Carol
6)Christmas In New Orleans
7)Children Go Where I Send Thee
8)Angels We Have Heard On High
9)What Do Bad Girls Get?
10)Great Day In December
11)Silent Night

Yes, "What Do Bad Girls Get?" was one of the first tracks to audition, which is a Joan Osborne original Christmas question. This R&B, Rock, and Gospel collection is nice and Bluesy and a worthy companion to the 2002 "How Sweet It Is" CD release.

"Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album"

~ December 11, 2006 at 8:28 (Views: 40 )

Here's a collection of Christmas tunes that came out in 1994, which is another "missing from the database" CD release. It's a 31 minute and-some-seconds worth of Pop that consists of:

1)My Favorite Things
2)The Christmas Song
3)Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
4)Medley: We Wish You A Merry Christmas/Silent Night/O Come All Ye Faithful/Jingle Bells/Where Is Love
5)Christmasland
6)I Love The Winter Weather/I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm
7)White Christmas
8)Winter Wonderland
9)Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
10)Snowfall
11)I'll Be Home For Christmas

Now, let's see if the database knows anything about Ray Charles' Christmas set.

"Willie Kalikimaka"

~ December 6, 2006 at 6:51 (Views: 55 )

Gee, it's December, time to play Christmas music from one's collection. Here's a 1999 release by Willie K that this site knows nothing about.

1)Mele Kalikimaka
2)Christmas Island
3)What Child Is This (Greensleeves)
4)Christmas Bells
5)Away In A Manger
6)Reggae Christmas
7)Silent Night
8)I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
9)The Little Drummer Boy/Ring Your Christmas Bells
10)Unto Us Is Born A King
11)Merry Christmas
12)O Holy Night
13)Song of Christmas

It looks like an ordinary set of Christmas songs, right? Not exactly. Willie K's take on these songs is to ROCK them! Imagine "The Little Drummer Boy" played by Led Zeppelin in their prime. This release is a set of personal favorites recorded between another studio session that features Willy Nelson. A track of note is "O Holy Night" which soars into the stratosphere. It's a local classic, and will get you in the spirit of Christmas... http://store.mountainapplecompany.com/Willie+K/Willie+Kalikimaka?osCsid=efcd0aaa9555781af360f321c9d7cd96

"Maluhia" by Keali'i Reichel

~ November 23, 2006 at 2:18 (Views: 52 )

Just before Thanksgiving and Christmas, this small collection of Christmas songs evokes the spirit of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" in a compact (9 tracks, 31:10) package.

1) Nu 'Oli
2) Remind Me of Home
3) O Holy Night
4) Ke Aloha Kalikimaka
5) Merry Christmas Darling
6) Silent Night (Po La'i E)
7) Christmas Lullaby
8) Ke Au Maluhia
9) Till The Season Comes 'Round Again

If you get worn down doing last minute Christmas shopping, attending far too many parties, or just need reminding of what the season is about, put this on the CD player and tour some tranquil and refreshing parts of Maui.
